Think Twitter Sucks? Here’s Why You’re Wrong

I spend a ridiculous amount of time on Twitter, and I have done since I was 15 years old. It’s a social network that I just can’t get enough of, and I’m sad to meet so many people who don’t share my love for it. From clients who just don’t understand it to fellow marketers who abhor it, Twitter doesn’t get the love it deserves, and I think I might know why.

The majority of businesses, marketers and day to day users on Twitter just do what I like to call “tweeting into the wind”. A random tweet, perhaps with a link and a photo, a few generic hashtags (#motivationalmonday anybody? Or even worse – and it trends every week without fail - #motivatonalmonday) and you just hope for the best. That’s not what Twitter is about; it never has been, but it’s how too many people have become accustomed to using it. Twitter is a social network, and nothing about this method of tweeting is social. If anything, it’s just lazy.

If you want to make the most of Twitter (and become as obsessed with it as I am!), then read on for six ways you should be using this nifty network…

1.Community Engagement
Why tweet at nobody in particular when there are groups of people just waiting for you to join their conversation? If you’re in Lancashire, introduce yourself to #LancashireHour. If you’re a dentist, get involved with #DentalHour. There’s something on Twitter for everyone, and if you can’t find the chat for you, start one yourself! We’ve put together a comprehensive list of Twitter chats to save you hours of searching. Just click the button below to download:

2. Customer Support
If I have a problem with my coffee in Costa, I tweet them. I’m not ashamed to say that I tweet Sainsbury’s on occasion too, and O2’s support team have definitely felt my wrath. It’s not just problems though – I’m not averse to tweeting praise where it’s deserved! Your followers probably tweet other brands too, so giving them a dedicated spot for customer support on a platform that’s familiar to them is a gesture that will go a long way when it comes to building customer loyalty.

3. Prospecting
Bear with me here, because most people don’t believe that you can get leads from Twitter. Believe it or not, you can employ one of my favourite LinkedIn prospecting tactics, and if you stick with it then it will work. You’ve got to know your keywords pretty well, but just try using Twitter as a search engine. Type in “Can anybody recommend…” and then your keywords, just as you would on LinkedIn – you might be surprised at how many leads you’ll discover!

4. Crowdsourcing
Whether you just want an opinion on your new business card design, or you’re looking to work with influencers, Twitter should be your go-to platform every time. A quick poll is something that most users love, and you’ll find bloggers a-plenty with hashtags #bloggerswanted and #bloggeropportunity.

5. Brand Personality
Acting professional is pretty important, but so is having a little fun. Twitter encourages you to use GIFs and emojis and to interact with Hollywood’s finest. By adding a spark of personality to your brand and being a little cheeky on this network, you’re able to engage with more real people and add a more human aspect to your brand.

6. Carving a Niche
I follow catposting on Twitter (and so does Ed Miliband), and I also follow WeRateDogs. As you can probably tell, I don’t like to take things too seriously, and they give my timeline some light relief. Of course, they’re pretty extreme examples of carving a niche, but you get my point. Twitter is a great place to try something quirky, and if it doesn’t stick then you can easily move on. Try starting an industry specific hashtag to see if it takes off, or make your profile a bit tongue in cheek. We all appreciate something a little unexpected every now and again.

Twitter is awesome. If you follow these top tips and use the network to interact rather than just tweeting into the void, you'll definitely believe me.
